Education Team Internship Details

Applications are currently being accepted for the Spring and Summer 2027 intern sessions. To apply, you must meet the following requirements:

• 18 years or older
• Must be pursuing a relevant degree or have a strong passion to work in this field
• Ability to control the urge to play with and/or pet the wildlife
• Ability to work kindly with people of all ages
• Ability to lift, push, or pull 30 pounds
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, especially high heat and humidity → Exposure to mosquitoes and other small insects is likely
• Once trained, must be able to work with minimal supervision, yet must recognize limitations in knowledge and abilities and ask for help when needed
• Ability to work independently for long periods of time, as well as work in a professional manner within a team atmosphere with other interns/volunteers/staff → Understand the need to perform your assigned tasks, but also recognize when others need extra help and be able to step in to provide assistance in order for everyone to accomplish their goals/tasks for the day

The internship runs 12–16 weeks with 10–20 hours per week, offering flexibility for class schedules.

Why Intern at ECWR?

The experience gained from the immersion into the world of wildlife rehabilitation and animal husbandry is extremely beneficial to those who are contemplating careers in the fields of education, wildlife management, environmental science, biology, or communications.

Our Education Internship Program is designed to provide hands-on experience in environmental education, public engagement, and conservation communication. Interns gain practical skills by assisting with educational programs, leading visitor interactions, supporting outreach events, and helping develop curriculum for a wide range of audiences. Through this training, interns will build confidence in teaching, public speaking, and translating wildlife science into meaningful learning experiences for the community.

Upon successful completion of the internship, interns will receive a certificate and documentation of the hours of service performed.

Participation in the ECWR internship program may also meet the requirements of your college or university, and you may be able to receive school credit for your internship with ECWR. ECWR completes this requested paperwork on an individual basis, as we provide intern-specific summaries of completed projects, programs supported, and educational experience gained at the conclusion of the internship.

Intern Responsibilities

Education interns may assist with:

• Leading visitor interactions and answering wildlife-related questions
• Supporting daily operations in the Education Center
• Assisting with on-site educational programs, tours, and field trips
• Helping develop age-appropriate curriculum, activities, and lesson plans
• Participating in community outreach events and off-site programs
• Creating educational signage, presentations, or digital content
• Caring for ambassador animals under staff supervision (if applicable at your refuge)
• Maintaining cleanliness and organization of educational spaces
• Supporting conservation messaging and public engagement efforts
• Completing assigned projects related to education or outreach
